Gladiator 2
The crowd is chanting. The dual emperors of Rome are thirsty for blood. Step back into the coliseum, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for glorious combat.
After weeks of teaser images and previews, the first trailer for “Gladiator II” was finally released last week, and it’s stunning. I haven’t been this excited about a movie about Rome since the original “Gladiator” trailer debuted nearly 25 years ago. (I even bought the original film on 4K Blu-ray to rewatch before the sequel comes out).
The sequel to Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix’s epic historical drama arrives years after the first movie. It follows Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of the first film’s villain, Commodus (Phoenix).
In the original film, Lucius was a boy played by Spencer Treat Clark. His mother sent him to Africa to escape Rome’s grip, but he returns in the sequel as a gladiator. In Rome, he encounters the powerful and scheming Macrinus (Denzel Washington) and General Marcus Acacius, who once served under General Maximus (Crowe).
